Determiner

One thing/person is possessed

  • sama (or suma): my
  • sa: your (singular)
  • -am: his, her, its
  • suñu: our
  • seen: your (plural)
  • seen: their

More than one thing/person is possessed

  • samay (or sumay): my
  • say: your (singular)
  • ay: his, her, its
  • suñuy: our
  • seeni: your (plural)
  • seeni: their

Notes

  • As in English, in Wolof, the possessiv determiner is used for persons that you actually do not possess. For example: "my wife: sama jabar", "my kid: sama doom"
  • In Wolof, the gender of the possessor for the third person is irrelevant. "-am" means his, her or its
  • For the third person singular, -am is attached at the end of the word.
