Vanadium (redox) battery (VRB) aka vanadium redox flow'e' (VRF) are a type of battery based on vanadium

In June 2025, the deployment of a VRB of 200 MW/1 GWh combined with 1 GW PV Xinjiang (North West of China) was announced [PVM 1]. The projected costed 520 million USD. Xinjing is a relatively sparsely populated region with 25 million inhabitants and an area of 1.7 million square km.

Pros

  • self-discharge
  • depth of discharge
  • fire risks
  • long life cycle

Cons

  • large tanks
  • pumping systems
  • lower round-trip efficiency
  • limited number of deployments compared to LiOn batteries
  • price volatility linked to price of vanadium

Applications

One niche applications could be long term storage (>4hours).
