VRB
From Youssefsan
Vanadium (redox) battery (VRB) aka vanadium redox flow'e' (VRF) are a type of battery based on vanadium
In June 2025, the deployment of a VRB of 200 MW/1 GWh combined with 1 GW PV Xinjiang (North West of China) was announced [PVM 1]. The projected costed 520 million USD. Xinjing is a relatively sparsely populated region with 25 million inhabitants and an area of 1.7 million square km.
Pros
- self-discharge
- depth of discharge
- fire risks
- long life cycle
Cons
- large tanks
- pumping systems
- lower round-trip efficiency
- limited number of deployments compared to LiOn batteries
- price volatility linked to price of vanadium
Applications
One niche applications could be long term storage (>4hours).
